The Apple iPhone SE 2022 is released a few days back, and Apple always tries to flaunt its ability to save metal, this time it’s reducing the environmental impact of the metal itself. Apple says the latest iPhone SE (2022 Model) is the first product made from a “commercial-purity” low-carbon aluminum at an industrial scale. A Canada-based company named Elysis has produced a batch for Apple using a carbon-free, hydropower-based smelting process that outputs oxygen rather than greenhouse gases.
Apple and Elysis didn’t say how many iPhone SE units are using this aluminum. The design of the iPhone relies on aluminum for the frame, but the back is covered by glass that helps with wireless charging and data reception. The development of this metal is a long time coming. Apple helped Elysis in development by investing and managing the teams. Apple also bought the first batch of aluminum from Elysis to produce the 16-inch MacBook Pro in 2019.
Aluminum-linked carbon emissions at Apple have dropped significantly (70%) since 2015, the company says. Apple says that it has routinely invested money in this project through three “Green Bonds” total of $4.7 billion. This investment started back in 2016 and focused on both reducing emissions and providing clean power to Apple. These funds for Elysis “Low-carbon aluminum” come from a 2019 bond backing 50 projects, including ones that “mitigate or offset” 2.9 million metric tons of CO2 and establish close to 700MW of renewable energy.
The efforts of both companies (Apple & Elysis) are towards building an image of Apple as a contributor to climate change like rival companies such as Samsung and other rivals. This greater use of eco-friendly aluminum will help Apple to reach its goal of selling carbon-neutral products by 2030.
